Drying & Dehumidification

After, the water has been removed, all wet items will be removed including rugs, personal items, furniture, children’s toys, bedding, and other similar items. Drywall baseboards that are irreparable will be cut away and thrown out. Some cabinets will have to be taken out and thrown away. However, if the doors are opened and the toe kicks (bottom piece of the cabinet structure) removed, then the cabinets can be saved. One means of testing materials such as drywall to know what can be salvaged is to push into the material with your finger, one foot above the waterline. If the drywall is spongy and gives under the pressure, then there is a good chance it must be removed. Next, the affected areas will be left to dry using fans and other equipment.

Cleaning & Sanitizing

After all the irreparable materials of the home (or business) have been removed and the area has been dehumidified, then it is time to begin the cleaning process.  Every formerly wet surface must be treated and cleaned. As we mentioned earlier, even though water is generally associated as being a “clean” thing, when it has been left standing, it often becomes contaminated with bacteria and other harmful microorganisms. Also, areas that have been wet due to burst pipes or other means of flooding are susceptible to mold growth. Mold, though not deadly on its own, can cause incredibly harmful health issues; complications can often result and in some cases even death. For this reason, getting every surface cleaned and sanitized is a must.

And finally, after all of that has been completed, the restoration process can begin. Though the process will vary for each situation, there will often be a need for reassessment after all other processes have been completed to see the extent of restoration that is needed. Next, we can begin the rebuilding process and putting your home or business back together with the means in place to hopefully avoid a similar accident in the future.
